Racism: Follow the Money with Solana Rice and Robert ReichMass incarceration costs $182,000,000,000 a year — turning a massive profit for Big Banks and for-profit prison operators. Former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich is joined by Solana Rice of Liberation in a Generation to discuss how racism is profitable, and how we can change the rules of our economy to ensure Black, Indigenous, and people of color not only survive but thrive.

Racism is Profitable | Robert ReichSolana Rice and Jeremie Greer, Co-Founders of Liberation in a Generation, explain how the profitability of racism sparks a vicious cycle called the Oppression Economy, which has been churning for centuries.
In our racialized capitalist society, elite institutions are motivated to keep suppressing the economic vitality of Black people, indigenous people, and people of color. That economic oppression in turn hinders their political power, and that political oppression kneecaps their ability to change the system in which racism is so profitable.
So how do we break the cycle?
Let’s start with supporting candidates and pressuring elected officials at every level of government who will support bold policies that dismantle the Oppression Economy and build a Liberation Economy — and remove those that don’t.
To build a Liberation Economy our government must guarantee that all people of color have access to basic economic rights like guaranteed income and employment, universal health care, guaranteed housing, a free college education and generational wealth.
This Liberation Economy is within our power to create. As Teddy Roosevelt said, “we are the government.” It does not belong to the corporations and the plutocrats that currently control them. It belongs to us, and it is within our power to take it back.
Let's get to work.

The Real Threat to Law and Order | Robert ReichFormer Secretary of Labor Robert Reich exposes the real threat to law and order in America — and it's not protesters demanding an end to police violence, as Trump claims. It's the highly armed and racist right-wing vigilantes, along with the conspiracy theorists and shady criminals Trump has repeatedly encouraged and surrounded himself with.
Take for example, the white gun-toting 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse, who has been charged with killing two people and wounding a third during Black Lives Matter protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin – and who, perhaps not coincidentally, occupied a front-row seat at a Trump rally in Des Moines last January.
Or consider the pro-Trump caravan that drove into Portland, Oregon, including the neo-fascist Proud Boys – shooting Black Lives Matter protesters with pepper spray and paintballs and driving into crowds.
The threat to law and order also comes from conspiracy theorists like Marjorie Taylor Greene, the recently-nominated Republican candidate for Georgia’s 14th congressional district and QAnon supporter, whose adherents believe Trump is battling a cabal of “deep state” saboteurs who worship Satan and traffic children for sex. Trump has praised Greene repeatedly.
And it comes from Trump’s own lackeys who have brazenly broken laws to help him attain and keep power. Since Trump promised to hire only "the best people," fourteen Trump aides, donors and advisers have been indicted or imprisoned.
You want the real threat to American law and order? It’s found in these and other Trump enablers, lackeys, and bottom-dwellers. They are the inevitable excrescence of Trump’s above-the-law, race-baiting, me-first presidency. It’s from the likes of them that the rest of America is in true need of protection.

What You Need to Know this Labor Day | Reich at HomeFormer Secretary of Labor Robert Reich discusses Trump’s repeated attacks on working people, and the injustice of billionaires' wealth soaring as millions are unemployed and on the brink of eviction.
How Big Money Corrupts Our Politics (And How to Fix It) | Robert ReichFormer Secretary of Labor Robert Reich breaks down the ways big money corrupts our political system, and what we can do to create a government of, by, and for the people.
It's difficult to do anything — increase the minimum wage, reverse climate change, get Medicare for All, end police killings, fight systemic racism, shrink our bloated military — when big money controls our politics and dictates what policies are and aren't enacted.
As Americans are still suffering massive unemployment and the ravages of the pandemic, lobbyists are crawling all over Capitol Hill and the White House is seeking continued subsidies for the rich and for corporations — while demanding an end to supplemental assistance for average working people, the poor, and the unemployed.
It’s corruption in action. And it’s undermining our democracy at every turn.
So how do we get big money out of our politics?
A good starting point can be found in the sweeping reform package known as H.R. 1 — the For the People Act. The bill closes loopholes that favor big corporations and the wealthy, makes it easier for all of us to vote, and strengthens the power of small donors through public financing of elections.
These are just a few examples of tangible solutions that already exist to rein in unprecedented corruption and stop America’s slide toward oligarchy — but there’s much more we can and should do. The important thing to remember is that the big money takeover of our democracy prevents us from advancing all of the policies we need to overhaul our racist, oppressive system and create a society that works for the many, not the few.

The Post Office Crisis to Come | Robert ReichDonald Trump and Postmaster General DeJoy's sabotage of the United States Postal Service is far from over and Congress must act now to protect the Postal Service & the 2020 election.

Trump openly admitted he was sabotaging the post office to stop people from voting. Now his political stooge postmaster general is basically saying “trust me.”
Sorry, Mr. DeJoy, we don't trust you.
Congress must step in and do four things to protect the Postal Service and the integrity of mail-in voting before it’s too late:
• The Senate must approve the $25 billion in USPS funding passed in the House.
• Force DeJoy to repair all the damage he’s already caused, returning the USPS back to full capacity.
• Fully investigate DeJoy‘s conflicts of interest. DeJoy still has at least a $30 million stake in his former company XPO Logistics, which directly competes with the Postal Service — putting him in a position to profit directly from any loss of Postal Service customers.
• Pass legislation specifically blocking the Postal Service from instituting any changes that would slow mail delivery in the lead-up to November.
Trump and DeJoy will stop at nothing to sabotage the USPS and steal the election — and there’s no telling the damage Trump will wreak if he’s able to swindle a second term.
Call your members of Congress at (202) 224-3121 and demand your representatives take these urgent steps to save the USPS and protect the election. The stakes couldn’t be higher.

Electing the Biden-Harris Ticket is Just the BeginningElecting the Biden-Harris ticket is just the beginning of the work to overhaul our oppressive system — our real work begins in November, not January, with no apologies, and no patience for delay.
Robert Reich discusses the need for transformational change with Reverend Dr. William Barber II, who lays out five interlocking injustices that undermine the heart and soul of our democracy: systemic racism, systemic poverty, ecological devastation, militarism, and religious nationalism.
Rev. Dr. Barber also highlights the need to vote not just on personality and personal decency, but with a transformative agenda in mind that calls for fundamental systems changes

What Do Russia and the United States Have in Common? When you hear the word "oligarchy," what do you think of? Russia? China? Or the United States? We may enjoy some aspects of a democratic society, but over the past 40 years we have slid further and further towards oligarchy. Decades of cutting taxes for the rich, systematically gutting public services and safety nets, and chipping away at worker power has led to the concentration of wealth and political power in the hands of a few at the very top. The only way to overcome the oligarchy and Trump's divide-and-conquer strategy is for the rest of us to unite and win. That means not only working together to ensure the Biden-Kamala ticket defeats Trump, but also that we continue to make transformative demands starting in November, with no patience for delay.

Elizabeth Warren: Democrats Need to Walk the WalkDon't get lost in the minute-by-minute punditry of the 2020 Democratic National Convention. Former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich and Senator Elizabeth Warren emphasize why getting big money out of politics must be among the Democrats' top priorities. It's not just massive campaign contributions — it's the armies of lobbyists that descend on Capitol Hill every day, the think tanks that ghostwrite policy, the fat cat donors who can buy all the subsidies and loopholes they ever want. In Warren's estimation, the Democratic Party isn't doing enough to stand up to this corrupting influence, and it must be the first item on their agenda if they hope to reform government to work for the people rather than the richest few.

Here's Why You Can't Sit This Election OutThere are tens of millions of eligible voters who, for a variety of reasons, don’t participate in elections. Given what a Trump second term would look like, and Trump’s attempts to suppress turnout, everyone who is eligible needs to make a plan to vote now. Here are a few key steps you should all take to make sure your voice is heard this November:
1. Check your voter registration status by visiting this page. There, you can find your state or local election office for more detailed instructions on how to confirm your status: www.usa.gov/election-office
2. Confirm the deadline to register to vote in your state by visiting this page: http://bit.ly/election-deadlines-2020
3. Verify your state’s guidelines for requesting and submit a mail-in ballot using this resource put together by Axios: http://bit.ly/how-to-vote-2020
4. Use the same site to confirm if your state allows you to drop off your mail-in ballot at a local elections office before November 3rd.
5. Make a plan to vote, and vote early if you can — given Trump's attacks on the USPS, allow more time than you think to ensure your ballot gets counted.
6. Tell everyone you know to do the same.
This is our chance to stop our slide towards fascism. We can't pass it up.
